Tankless water heaters have taken the plumbing industry by storm. They have recently become the go-to water heaters in new homes, so let’s weigh some of their pros and cons.
- PRO: Instant hot water. With a tankless water heater, there’s no waiting for water to get warm. Instead, a turn of the faucet immediately puts out hot water! Tankless water heater repair is also less frequent than with a traditional water heater.
- CON: Higher initial investment. A tankless water heater costs about twice as much as a traditional water heater. The higher initial cost is not a feasible financial option for some homeowners.
- PRO: Lower utility bills. Tankless water heaters are very energy efficient, lowering utility bills for homeowners. However, a downfall to their energy efficiency is that tankless water heaters do not turn on if the tap is slightly open, like when brushing teeth or rinsing something quickly.
- CON: Additional equipment may be necessary. A water softener is likely needed to ensure your tankless water heater heats appropriately. Not only does this take away from the space-saving benefit of the tankless water heater, but it also provides an increased risk of needing tankless water heater repair due to the added equipment.
